The prodigal Palin

With her new book hitting the market, Sarah Palin is back in the spotlight, and once again on the cover of Newsweek. Just like last time, the cover has caused a media firestorm. She says the photo of her in shorty-shorts, originally shot for a running magazine, is taken out of context and sexist.

Newsweek’s official statement says the magazine chose the best photo to illustrate the stories inside the publication about Palin, and they applied the same standards to her that they would to any other public figure.

Palin and her followers obviously disagree. Her official statement can be found on her Facebook page.

In light of this new development and judging the overall reception of her new book, do you feel that Palin is mistreated in the media? Leave your vote and comments.

Do you think Sarah Palin is treated fairly by the media?

  1. Susan Lindsey says:

I would have appreciated the opportunity to voice my opinion through your “vote” on Sarah Palin’s treatment by the media, but I found the options you gave to choose from did not reflect my opinion. I believe that the mainstream media does show bias in their treatment of her and finds every opportunity to bend the stories to make her look like some sort of sap or incompetent. Therefore, I would have voted that yes, she is always mistreated by the mainstream media. I didn’t find that option available. How does your choice: Yes. She is overreacting or Sometimes she is mistreated, meet the standards of an answer to a direct question such as yours: Do you think Sarah Palin is treated fairly in the meda?

    • Ann Russell says:

I agree with Susan Lindsey. There is absolutely bias by the mainstream media when it comes to former Governor Palin. Your choices are biased as well.

      • James Lovette says:

I agree with Ann Russell 100%

        • Howard Johnson says:

James Lovette’s right about Ann Russell being right.

The media DOES treat her with bias and it shows with your options to this poll. Did you hear that the AP assigned 11 writers to fact check her book? They found six supposed errors, which are arguable. That’s less than one per person. Did they do that to Al Gore or Obama’s books?

          • mtucker says:

You are right. The question was poorly written. No bias was intended. I can’t change the copy in the newsletter but I can delete this poll and start over for future visitors to this blog.
Sarah deserves that. It’s only fair. Thank you all for pointing out this mistake.

            • Joyce M. says:

I chose sometimes because it was not a yes or no answer. I agree with the previous writers who indicated bias. Unfortunately most polls are inadequate and therefore, somewhat biased. All should have an option to explain an answer. I like Sarah Palin. At the very least, she gets everyone’s attention, and makes one stop and think before blindly following the “party line”. I look forward to a different survey.

  2. Julie Watson says:

I agree with Susan’s comments. I don’t remember what the last week’s poll was or maybe it was a previous week, but the choices then were along the same lines as today. They seemed to slant toward the thinking of mainstream media and basically watered down any answer along the conservative line.

  3. Luke L says:

Susan has clearly pointed out your own glaring bias against Palin. But then again, you are the Arkansas DEMOCRAT-Gazette.

  4. Connie says:

I agree with Susan’s comments above. This, again, seems to be media mistreatment by not offering an option to simply say “No. I do not feel Sarah Palin was treated fair by in the media.”

  5. Tom says:

Your lack of true options to your questions show your bias. The media is very biased toward Palin. They are afraid of her true abilities and popularity with the common American. Watching her over the next 3 years will be very interesting. The media bias will only increase to the ridiculous.

  6. Joyce says:

What kind of survey questions are those? Talk about bias!

  7. Jamey says:

Susan hit the nail on the head. This is another misleading attempt to slant the truth. More proof that polls and statistics can be gathered to make a situation appear differently than it really is. WHERE IS THE INTEGRITY AND IMPARTIAL NATURE OF TRUE REPORTERS TODAY ? More proof the media has no concern or conscience when agendas are put ahead of fair and equal treatment.

  8. Larry says:

I have to say I enjoy these newsletter, especially being new to the area, but, your poll doesn’t give an option to say “no, she is not treated fairly”. Even though it is un-scientific, the way it is framed is biased. So yes, she is definitely treated unfairly in the media, including within the confines of your newsletter.

  9. Perry says:

You have to be out of touch if you cannot see that SARAH PALIN has been, and still is.
treated unfairly by the news media. And the #two question the begins withe NO then
continues with “I see not bias” really does not make good sense. I suggest you get
someone else to frame the questions. If had just said NO would have selected that,
however, since it said “I see no bias” then I had to rule that out.

    • Jon B says:

The possible answers don’t even make sense. # 2 and #3 should start with Yes. If you see no bias, then she is treated fairly. If she deserves it, then she is treated fairly. Of course, the choice I would make is not even on the poll. Gee, imagine that.

  10. Larry says:

The democratic party and the liberal left remind me of sheep walking off a cliff. They really think conservative Americans don’t exist, or won’t take the time to correct a wrong. Keep walking that same line guys, just like every other newspaper and TV station that doesn’t truly reflect the views of its’ users, you will cease to exist in the minds of thoughtful americans with conservative moral values.

  11. Fred says:

I completely agree with Susan’s comments. I had to read the options several times to make sure I was reading them correctly. In not finding the objective stand alone answers of “yes”, “no”, “maybe”, and “undecided” it was obvious this is being asked to gather “data” to write a predisposed article. The intent behind this survey was more obvious than Keith Olbermann and MSNBC and their liberal slant on Palin and all other matters. Keep it simple with objective answers and let the opinions: “She is overreacting”, “I see no bias”, “but she deserves it”, “Sometimes she is mistreated.”

  12. Gary says:

Wow. What can I say that hasn’t already been said. Maybe someone should review their choices before they publish them? The “No” choice was ok until it got qualified. Oh well, add me to the NO votes!

  13. Judy says:

I agree that she is UNFAIRLY treated by the media. I think that the media uses every chance they get to blow an incident out of proportion. Now I am upset with the McClain camp. I think the Republican Party doesn’t want her to run for office in 2012 and they are beginning to spread bad press as well. I am particularly upset with the late night talk shows and other media when they started making fun of her children. I also thought it was in very poor taste the way they made fun of Chelsea Clinton and the Bush daughters , when their fathers ran for office. The children are not running for office and therefore should not be subject the the ridicule. I was extremely surprised with the Obama daughter were not subject to ridicule. Wonder why they were excluded???

  14. Brandon says:

No, she is not treated fairly in the media. And you are clearly demonstrating your own bias with the set of possible choices you are allowing.

  15. Lew Sorrells says:

    Ditto to Ann Russell!!

  16. Mary says:

How biased can you be while surveying for bias?! PATHETIC!! You can’t even bring yourself to allow us to express an opinion? Then why act as if you’re doing a survey?

  17. charlie says:

i agree with the majority above and can only add, “did anybody proofread the question and answers before submission?” it really isn’t very logical.

  18. cathy says:

I don’t think your answers are necessarily biased, just poorly written. As Jon B. (and others) pointed out above, your number two option should just be “no”….adding “I see no bias” completely changes the response from a NO to a YES. Please send your editors back to grammar class. In the meantime, I do think she is often treated unfairly….but I have also seen her set herself up for unfavorable coverage by the things she chooses to say. Personally, I don’t think she is quite ready to handle things on a national level.

  19. Lou Hlavenka says:

She is treated as fairly as any other politician. Politics s a rough game if she doesn’t like it, choose a different vocation.

  20. Skipper W says:

You should have Bradley Gitz review your poll questions and multiple choices.

  21. Yes, I think she may be treated with bias! But that’s because she opens her mouth and STUPID comes out..She is the poorest excuse for a woman that I can think of…she has her own personal agenda and money is the main goal! She dumped the people of Alaska after taking an oath that she would serve and didn’t….we are so lucky that she was never elected! McCain has even seen the ugly side of her! Good riddance!

    • Larry says:

Excuse me, but how is what she did, any different than what Bill Clinton did? Other than she at least did resign from being Governer, while Bill did not. Before the last state election in 1991, he PROMISED that he WOULD NOT run for any other office or leave the state UNTIL AFTER THAT TERM WAS COMPLETED. Just one more lie from him to the people who elected him. Bill was the supposed Governer of the state, but was on the campaign trail for months. Drawing a pay check but not here to do anything… Just like Hillary did during her run for President… The people of New York were short a Senator for a LONG time…

Yes, I believe that Sarah Palin is mistreated by the media, just like any public figure that is a conserative…

And you can say that Sarah Palin opens her mouth and stupid comes out, but she knows how many states there are in the United States, she knows that the people of Austria speak German, she knows what it is like to have international borders that have to be monitored and defended… Unlike another public official that shall remain nameless…

  22. Waymond "ARkey" says:

I voted NO! Thinking my vote was making a statement of “Yes she is treated unfairly and with bias always! I agree with Susan, “I believe that the mainstream media does show bias in their treatment of her and finds every opportunity to bend the stories to make her look like some sort of sap or incompetent.” I would love to see the cuttings on the floor from the CBS’s Katie Couric interview…”Betcha” the “gotcha” report would tell a totally different story than Ms Curic’s final report did on CBS!

I think your lead in to the poll question truly indicates your bias. News Media needs to “relearn” how to report the news and not their opinion or exaggeration. I do get tired of reading and hearing “Hot Mud Splash” reporting. To somewhat quote another news organization and tell you how I want the news…”You report, I can decide.”

    Be Blessed,

    ARkey

  23. Tom says:

It’s hard to believe the gullibility of the right-wing American public. I am a moderate (but vote Republican over 90% of the time) and see little to no value in the views voiced by Palin. I could find more-qualified candidates/speakers at my local library.

  24. Lee says:

She is what she is,the media is more fair to her than they were to Hillary.
However, she has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth.

  25. Luke L says:

The media is fair to Palin??? The AP assigns 11 reporters to fact check Palin’s 430 page book. Let’s see, how many reporters were assigned to fact check Gore’s and Obama’s? Geez, they won’t answer the question and that’s because the answer is obviously, they were simply going after Palin. Tell you what, why not have those same 11 fact check the Health Care Bill. Bet they will find all kinds of lies but then again, if it’s Democrat, you get a free pass.

  26. Drew says:

There is even a slight bias in your survey.
The options on the survey are (Yes, No, Sometimes and Undecided) but on the questionaire page, the options were worded differently.
Q: Do you think Sarah Palin is treated fairly in the media?
    • Yes. She is overreacting.
    • I see no bias.
    • No, but she deserves it.
    • Sometimes she is mistreated.
    • Undecided
